Boobs on Bikes organizer defiant 'parade' will go ahead
Last year's Boobs on Bikes parade
The rest of New Zealand may glance sideways but the biggest controversy in Auckland tonight is a row over the Boobs on Bikes parade.
The City Council is seeking an interim injunction to stop the controversial Queen Street parade.
But pornographer Steve Crow says that will not stop him. He is vowing Boobs on Bikes will go ahead, just under another guise.
Steve Crow says his Boobs on Bikes parade is just harmless freedom of expression but Auckland City Council says he is using New Zealand's best known street to peddle porn.
Last month the Council passed a bylaw aimed at stopping events deemed offensive, but Crow vowed the parade would go on.
Today, the Council's city development committee voted in favour of seeking a court injunction to enforce their bylaw, with only one councillor voting against the motion.
Crow says he was not told about today's meeting and doubts the courts will grant an injunction but if they do he will simply rename his parade.
Instead, he says the parade will become a protest - something you do not need a permit for.
Crow met with police today. He says they will be on hand to manage traffic and look after public safety but do not have the power to enforce a civil injunction and given the parade is not illegal they will not be able to stop it.
But the councillor who asked for the injunction, says if need be, she will go ahead with her threat to lie down in the path of the parade to stop it and she says many other women will join her, meaning next Wednesday's parade could be even more of a spectacle than last year.
